In “Lively” Dramas, “I Am” the OST, About Kyuhyun’s participation in drama OSTs

OSTs are rolling machines. The stars are gaining attention because of the popularity of dramas. SNSD’s Taeyeon became famous because she sang “If” for Hong Gil Dong, while Super Junior’s Kyuhyun delivered Pasta’s charm through “Listen… to You”.

That’s not all. If the drama does not have an OST, it would be akin to a “bland beer”.

1.To evoke the fresh feeling in dramas, the hero (main actor) would frequently be allowed to hold the microphone*.

2.The coveted Idol’s OSTs

SS501, So Nyeo Shi Dae, Super Junior, Dong Bang Shin Ki, 4minute, and other popular idol groups all have a common point. In addition to being popular, they also hold the similarity of being “singers who perform the OSTs for dramas”.

The OST for the KBS2 national drama “King of Baking Kim Takgu”, which is currently in first place for having viewer ratings of over 40%, is sung by Super Junior’s Kyuhyun. Previously, Kyuhyun took part in the OST for the MBC drama “Pasta”, and this is the second time that he has held the responsibility for singing the OST for a drama. This time, “Hope is a Dream that Never Sleeps” (희망은 잠들지 않는 꿈), the title for King of Baking Kim Takgu’s OST that is performed by Kyuhyun, is a bright song with a medium tempo, and serves as the theme song for Kim Takgu in the series. Together with the rising popularity of the drama, the song is also gaining popularity.

K-pop stars kick off SM world tour in LA

When fans waiting in line for the S.M. Town Live 2010 World Tour in front of the Staples Center, Los Angeles, looked up at the sky, they were surprised to see the banners “`Relive S.M. Town at ALL K-POP.COM’’ trailing from a group of airplanes, The Korea Times’ sister paper Sports Hankook reported Monday.

Arranged by North American fans of a popular K-pop website, the special event this past Saturday signaled the start of the anticipated concert organized by SM. Entertainment, one of the biggest pop music agencies in Korea.

More than 15,000 fans made up the audience, including Hollywood actor Jack Nicholson. Along with the vivid costumes and music offered by the singers, the stage presentation was an impressive backdrop for the equally impressive S.M. star line up. According to S.M. Entertainment, the 3D images were created by the team that worked for the hit movie “Avatar.’’

Fans wearing the same-colored T-shirts started singing in front of the venue, while others showed off their dance moves.

“I like Lee Teuk from Super Junior. I got to know the group through the Internet and I’m not sure exactly what it is, but there is something special about him. I worked hard to earn money to come here,’’ said a Spanish fan, who was holding a Spanish flag with the boy band members’ names written on it.

The concert was scheduled to start at 7 p.m., but fans began to gather five hours before the event. Soon groups of fans got together and they started sharing information and talking about the latest news of S.M. stars, not much different from their Korean counterparts.

Upon the start of the event, fans welcomed J-min with her ballads and cheered on as the evening continued with some of the most popular groups and soloists appearing on stage.

Grace, SHINee, Trax and f(x), among others, heated up the stadium with their signature styles and melodies, while others paired up with fellow singers and actors for special collaborations.

The excitement continued as Girls’ Generation and Super Junior took the spotlight and performed some of their biggest hits while running around greeting fans.

Next came S.M. Entertainment’s biggest star of them all: BoA.

The singer, who released her digital single “Eat You Up’’ in the U.S. in 2008, started her show with one of her other hit songs “My Name,’’ and went on with “I Did It For Love’’ with SHINee’s Key.

The highlight was when TVXQ members U-Know and Max took to the stage to sing “Mirotic’’ and “Maximum.’’

The concert went on for four hours with 56 songs, surprising both fans and staff with colorful content and unstoppable energy.

The S.M. Town Live 2010 World Tour will continue to China on Sept. 11 and also to Japan in January, 2011.

SM Town charms L.A.

K-pop singers, actors and actresses from the SM Entertainment agency in Korea captivated more than 15,000 fans at the “SM Town Live World Tour” concert at the Staples Center in Los Angeles on Saturday.

The blockbuster concert featured some 40 of Korea’s biggest stars, including BoA, TVXQ, Girls’ Generation, Super Junior, f(x), SHINee, Kangta, Ara, Kim Min-jong and Lee Yeon-hee, who showcased 56 numbers.

BoA, the 23-year-old global star who recently released her sixth Korean album “Hurricane Venus,” heated up the stage with “My Name.” SHINee’s Key, once a member of BoA’s fan club, joined BoA on stage when she sung “I Did It for Love,” from her first U.S. album.

Girls’ Generation and Super Junior followed on stage, each showcasing hit numbers like “Run Devil Run,” “Kissing You” and “Sorry Sorry.”

Girls’ Generation’s Jessica and her younger sister Krystal from f(x) co-performed “Tik Tock” by Kesha and television stars including Kim Min-jong, Lee Yeon-hee and Ara also appeared on stage for joint performances with the singers.

Top-notch U.S. pop stars such as Beyonce, Usher, Justin Timberlake and Lady Gaga also performed at the Staples Center.

“It is meaningful that Korean artists held a show here for the first time. The ticket sales list showed that only 30 percent of the audience was Korean. It is notable that non-Koreans took up nearly 70 percent of the audience,” said an official from SM Entertainment.

“We saw potential for the success of not only SM artists but Korean artists in the U.S. market. A U.S. tour concert became a new hope for SM Town,” said Kim Young-min, president of SM Entertainment.

Started on Aug. 21 in Seoul, “SM Town Live World Tour” will continue in Shanghai on Sept. 11 then move to Tokyo.

The concerts are being filmed by PACE HD, a 3-D film shooting team which made the movie “Avatar.” Saturday’s concert marked $1.8 million (2.16 billion won) of ticket sales..

Take A Peek at SM Town’s LA Chartered Flight

A couple of days ago, the SM family boarded their plane at Incheon Airport for their next stop of SMTOWN Live ‘10 World Tour in Los Angeles, which will be taking place on September 4th.

For the very first time, SM Entertainment raked up a whopping 1 billion won for the expenses of their own chartered plane, a Boeing 747-400, which calculates to $851,000 USD. A total of 250 people, including staff, bodyguards, press reporters and 40 of SM artists, were all on board to LA.

The first artist to step foot on the chartered plane was Super Junior’s leader, Lee Teuk. Through the in-flight mic, Lee Teuk said, “When you talk loudly in public places, people glare at you and say, “Do you guys think you own this place?” Why yes, we really do own this!”, which made everyone laugh.

Kim Min Jong and Kangta had a fun time of their own, acting as stewards as they went around the whole plane, serving wine and swiping cards, and when they finished, Kangta made a toast to ‘South Korea to the world‘.

The first floor business section of the chartered plane consisted of Kangta, BoA, Kim Min Jong, DBSK’s Uknow Yunho and Max Changmin, SNSD and f(x). Super Junior and SHINee took over the business section of the second floor. Given the nickname ‘Charlie’s Angels‘, SNSD’s Yuri and actress Lee Yeon Hee sat together to gossip.

Inside the chartered plane, BoA commented, “I always travel to America, but since this time I’m going with other artists, it feels really good”, while Yunho adding, “It feels like we’re going on a reunion trip.”

Popular Korean Idol Group’s Rule: Leader of Blood Type A; Youngest Member Must Be Cute

Many Korean bands debut each year, and if you analyse how each of these idol groups achieved success, you will realize that there is actually a structure (like a perfect combination): With the group leader’s blood type being A, the group would be the most charismatic and stable; In a group, the youngest must be likeable; If their fans don’t have a representative name and color, it means that the color is not “fashion”.
Popular Idol Group Leader’s rule: Leaders are mostly Blood Type A
With the ‘war’ between Korean boy bands, in order to let each member show their own talents, the ‘leader’ has to be there. FT Island’s Choi Jung Hun, CNBlue’s Jung Yong Hwa, ZE:A’s Moon Jun Yeong, Super Junior’s Lee Teuk, DBSK’s Jung YunHo (UKnow), 2PM’s ex-leader Jaebum, 2AM’s Jo Kwon, Big Bang’s G-Dragon and B2ST’s Yoon Du Jun, the common point between these 9 leaders are that they are all of Blood Type A, and are all responsible, follow rules and like to service others. WIth groups having such sweet leaders, it is like they have something to lean on, and the leaders lead the group towards a goal.

Popular Idol Group Maknae’s (youngest) rule: Maknae must be cute; increase popularity
In Korea, respecting those who are older than you is very important. In korea’s boybands, there is also a special ‘Maknae’ culture: Like SS501′s Kim Hyung Joon, FT Island’s Choi Min Hwan***, Big Bang’s Seungri etc, because they are the youngest members, they are often teased, but their image is often cute and is loved by the audience. A manager of an idol group said, “when choosing the maknae member, other than that she/he must be talented, the most important factor is their skin and their looks, we wil try to choose those with milky skin and who have baby face.” In a group, the maknae is often the one who has to help his brothers/sisters, for example 2PM’s dorm, although they have a helper to clean their dorm, the one who has to throw the rubbish and clean up the dining table after a meal is always the youngest member, Chansung. Beast’s maknae, Song Dong Woon, is the one who creates the atmosphere in their dorm, and when his hyungs are feeling down, he will cheer them up.

Since 2000, the leaders have been used to increase the group’s popularity; but now, its the youngest members. U-Kiss’s Dongho is an example. Dongho rose to fame through a KBS2 TV program, and managed to show everyone what U-Kiss was made up of. T-ara’s maknae Jiyoon also increased T-ara’s poularity through acting in KBS2′s “God of Study”. The most miraculous thing is, when creating an idol group, the youngest member is usually the last to be chosen. This was the case for 4Minute’s Kwon So Hyung and Beast’s Song Dong Woon .
4Minute’s management company said, “Staying with members, the youngest member must have a lot of patience.” and also, “Although they do not talk much usually, but when needed, a powerful sentence from them might decide the result.”

Popular Idol Group Member’s Rule: There must be one with “Princess’ illness” and “Alien”
In an idol group, there is often one funny idol who likes to admire herself/himself (“Princess Illness”)in the mirror. Like Shinhwa’s ,Shin Hye SUng and Kim Dong Wan, DBSK’s Hero Jaejoong, SS501′s Park Jung Min, Super Junior’s Kim Hee Chul. Kim Heechul calls himself ‘cinderella’ and his fans also call him “Princess”. His image is more extravagant than women, with red hair, golden hair, silver hair, long ponytail, pink jacket, rainbow shawls, Roger Rabbit’s large T pyjamas, pink school bags; his members said “he likes to show his collarbone more than women do”, “Because he is worried that it is not good for his skin, he doesn’t even drink carbonate drinks”. They also praised him –”his nickname is Cindrella, he is the little red spot in SJ, which is green.” Park Jung Min is even worse, he locked himself in the toilet once, and faced the mirror touching his face saying “this is so pretty, i really want to hang you up on the wall.”, and when he is praised for his looks, he says “i was born like that.” He also often gives himself names like “Park Charisma”, “Sexy Park” etc.
As fir ‘Aliens’, there are ShinHwa’s Eric, DBSK’s Hero Jaejoong, SS501′s Kim Hyun Joong, Super Junior’s Kim Heechul, Big Bang’s T.O.P, 2PM’s Park Jaebum, 2AM’s Jo Kwon, they are called 4-dimensional, and tend to jump up with actions upon hearing certain words. Their actions often leave people wondering “Huh?” but at the same time finding it interesting, like Kim Hyun Joong’s first kiss scene, he asked the director, “Director..do i have to put my tongue in?” When asked who in “Boys over Flowers” is the most handsome, he would say “the colour of my hair is the most handsome” and weird answers like that. Idol groups with members with “princess illness” and “aliens” allow the group and members to have many things to talk about and laugh about, they are also well-loved, and are the ones in the group who lighten the atmosphere.

Also, many idol groups have members who have animals as their nicknames, for example Shinhwa’s Eric is rabbit, Lee Min Woo is cat, Shin Hye Sung is fox; Click-B’s Oh Jong Hyuk is rabbit; DBSK’s Junsu is dolphin; SS501′s Heo Young Saeng is beaver, Park Jung Min is horse; Super Junior’s Kangin is racoon, Eunhyuk is monkey, Sungmin is rabbit and Lee Donghae is fish.

Popular Idol Group Fans’ rule: Each group has a representative colour
Every idol group has its representive colour, and they have special names for their fans. Super Junior’s representative colour is Pearl Sapphire Blue, and they call their fans “E.L.F” (Ever Lasting Friends) “ELF” is also used to refer to elves, so their fans are also called “elves” (more relevant for chinese fans) SS501′s representative colour is green, so when their fans hold the green balloons, they look like peas, and thus SS501 calls their fans “Pea Princesses”. Their management company also produced pea cups, pea earrings etc. FT Island’s representative colour is yellow, and their fans are called “Primadonna” (‘Female lead’ in Italian), otherwise known as “Pri”.
Korea’s idol market has a very special ‘balloon culture’, as it is convenient to bring balloons around and they become big when air is blown in. This way, it is easy for singers to know where their fans are, and thus would interact with his/her fans more.

***Not sure why they say Choi Min Hwan is the maknae of FT Island, the maknae of FT Island is Song Seunghyun.
